ABOUT INDIAN INSTITUTES OF TECHNOLOGY

IIT-ROORKEE

The University of Roorkee being the first engineering university of independent India, is over 150 years old. Erstwhile known as Thomson College of Engineering, and internationally recognised for its excellence, Government of India in 2001 notified University of Roorkee as the seventh IIT.

The Institute offers 11 courses leading to a 4-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree. 5-year dualdegree programmes are also available here in a five disciplines wherein both B.Tech. and M.Tech. degrees are awarded after successful completion of the programme.

JOINT ENTRANCE EXAMINATION (JEE)

Students are admitted to undergraduate courses through an All-India competition known as Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted jointly by all the seven IITs, at various centres across the country in which over 3,80,000 candidates compete for nearly 8,300 seats. The admissions to the Institute of Technology-BHU, Varanasi; and ISMU, Dhanbad are also done through JEE.

For IIT-JEE, the examination will have two objective-type papers of three-hour duration each. Both the papers will have three separate sections on Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, designed to test the comprehension and analytical ability of the candidates.Students will get marks for Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics separately in the marks-card too.

Misconception about New Pattern

In the new pattern, one misconception that more often prevails, in the minds of students, is that
they think they can compete the JEE without studying the entire syllabus deeply, and erroneously
believe that only superficial knowledge is required to solve the objective type questions.

At this juncture, students and guardians have to have in their minds is that to be successful in any
objective type examination, the entire study is essential. Any short-cut is not sufficient to gain
success. With a strategy, students must know the topics on selective but instant-recall basis, and
should be competent to apply the instant knowledge/formulae directly on the data-set on PVAGA
(Put Value and Get Answer) basis. For this, key points, features and formulae should all be on the finger-tips of the student and he/she should be capable and confident of managing the twist in the question.

Naturally, to meet this challenge, you have to prepare for the entire syllabus thoroughly,
meticulously and whole-heartedly.

It is our experience that owing to the changed pattern of JEE, a large section of students could not
answer the questions as expected by the examiners. This happens because the students are rather illequipped to cope with the pattern of examination.

The students must have all the capabilities as required for Objective Test, but should be proficient in handling lengthy simplifications in a fast yet accurate way. The student should also know the method of resolving short write-up based questions into a combination of objective type questions.
